2016 Trip #11

Ash and I got a chance to get down to Springfield, CO for three days of shooting.  Really two days when the travel time is figured in.  It’s 5 hours each way, a hop skip and a jump compared to the distance the folks in the East would have to travel.   The weather has been HOT and WINDY for most of the month.  Getting close to drought conditions.  We don’t need that again.

This time of the year the nights are lighter than during the winter, so the dogs don’t have to eat during the daylight hours.  With the rain we had here in the West in the Spring the grass is really green and abundant.   They don’t have to spend a lot of time foraging for food.

We didn’t do bad, just not great.  We had to drive from field to field and ranch to ranch to have abundant targets.  Confirmed kills, a little over 375.  Me 187 of them.

I took three rifles.  20 VarTarg with a new 4 – 16 x 50 Mil-Dot scope.  My Rem 222 on a 700 action with a 6 – 24 x 50 Mil-Dot scope.  Plus my 223 AI on a Rem 722B action with a heavy 1 1/4 inch German Blazer barrel with a 6 – 24 x 50 Mil-Dot scope.  I didn’t shoot the 223 AI at all, but you never know when you’ll need another rifle, just in case.

My next trip to Springfield will be when the weather cools down some next month.

The 4 – 16 x 50 Mil-Dot scope will come off and go on one of my rim fires, soon.  A Tanner Gun Show came up a couple weeks ago and I bought two 6 – 24 x 50 Mil-Dot scopes.  One for the 20 VarTarg and one for the 17 Rem FireBall, I NEED POWER (MAGNIFICATION).

  • Total dogs for this trip: 187
  • Rifles used on this trip: 20 VarTarg and 222 Rem
  • TOTAL VARMINTS for the year : 2,771
