2016 Trip #15

Limon, CO 11/2 – 11/3 with Tom Jansen – Gunsmith and Myself.

Another short trip to central Colorado because of the very warm weather for November.  We drove out first thing on Tue in the cool morning darkness for breakfast in Limon, CO.  The ranch we were shooting on was just a few miles South of town.  The morning temperature was near freezing, but not real cold for November.  The prairie dogs weren’t up just yet so I decided to check the zero on my Armalite Rifle design 15, better known as the AR-15.  This rifle has been in my safe for several months, maybe over a year, needed to get it set-up to do some shooting.  After the trip in October and a few shots I figured out why I hadn’t done anything with it yet.  I didn’t have a muzzle break on it, nor a trigger I could stand or a long enough stock.  Now that I had my gunsmith with me I decided to have him do the work at a later date.  I went ahead and sighted it in to do some shooting.  The trigger was really bad, 5 or 6 pounds.

After an hour or so the prairie dogs started coming out to feed and see what was going on in the world, bad move.  We shot steady for about four hours with the wind coming up and going down, overall not a bad day.

I got some more blood on the AR-15, not a lot tho because I didn’t like the trigger.  The bigger scope made a lot of difference as far as seeing my target better, that for sure.  Tom is taking the upper and installing a break and checking out what a good trigger will cost, I can’t afford a match trigger, just a good trigger.

I also had my 20 Practical and 221 FireBall with me on this trip, both old standbys.  Total kills for this short trip was: 164.

Short trip yes, I had to get back to go to the Tanner Gun show.  I’m looking forward to that.

Something I wanted to point out in the first few pics, It’s been an extremely dry Fall, WE NEED SOME RAIN AND SNOW!!!!

I know, watch what you wish for.

  • Total dogs for this trip: 164
  • Rifles used on this trip: 20 Practical, 221 FireBall, and my AR-15
  • TOTAL VARMINTS for the year : 3,553
