My friend Ed and I left Denver at around 7:00 AM on the 3rd of May heading to Oregon for our 2nd annual Rat Shoot, my 3rd time to Oregon, Ed lived there for several years.

Three guys from Denver a friend, his brother, and his friend; left a little ahead of us.

We stayed overnight in Ontario, OR and got up the next morning to meet another Denver friend, that had been visiting his sister in Boise, ID and drove to the alfalfa farm we shot on and meet the last member of out group, a friend from Oregon, then there was seven.

Seven of us, five days. Total kills for the group, 12,557, and really probably a few more. The shooting was so fast it was hard to keep track of a good count. I shot 3,000 rounds, had 2,730 kills, at least. Many doubles and triples I lost count of I’m sure. We shot for 4 to 5 days, some guys less, some more. We had days the wind and cold kept some of the rats down, somewhat. A lot of the time it was non-stop shooting, shot for awhile, move 20 yards, do it again. My fingers got tired loading clips and rifles. Shot 900 22 LR, 900 22 Mag, 1,200 17 HMR.

MY 17 HMR with my 4 x 16 x 50 was the perfect combo. Wind didn’t effect it much and the scope was perfect power and adjustability. Rats were at all ranges, 8 feet to probably the longest shot of 60 yards.  I didn’t take any videos, to cold and windy most of the time, but got some pics.

  • For the 7 of us: 12,557
  • I shot 3,000 rounds, had 2,730 kills I shot 900 22 LR, 900 22 Mag, 1,200 17 HMR.
  • Total for the year 3,190
