2016 Trip #4

Wasn’t a real good trip this time.  The weather wasn’t really bad, except for the wind.  The dogs weren’t out, at least in numbers.  Some fields were shot on fairly hard, we heard shots all around use on the weekend, not so much Monday.  The wind was the worst on Monday, weather folks said ” A front will be coming through this afternoon “.  We decided to leave around noon, not much shooting at all.

I used my 22 PPC (Thumb-hole) and my Rem 700 222 Rem shooting about the same with both.  The day before I had just put on new scopes and was looking forward to see how they would do.

My new gunsmith had installed muzzle brakes on both and changed out the stock (glass bedded, floated the barrel, and got the trigger to 1 1/2 pounds)  on the Rem 700 222 Rem.

Mornings were still cold so the dogs weren’t moving much until near noon, I’m ready for summer shooting and the pups to be out.  I like target rich environments.

The females were down with their pups.  The dogs we checked were all males, about another month before the pups will be active above ground.

If Springfield doesn’t get some rain the shooting will not be good.  Same thing happen last year, mid-April started with very little rain and never got much better for the rest of the year.

We shot a total of 254, I got 123 of them.  Most shots were in the 200 yard + range, several closer to 300 yards, most seamed to be all cross wind.  If it wasn’t for the Mil Dot scopes I wouldn’t have done well at all.

I’m planning more Northern shoots this year.  At least one trip each to North and South Dakota, several to Wyoming, one “rat shoot” to Oregon, and maybe one to Montana.

  • Total dogs for this trip: 123
  • Rifle used on this trip Rem 700 222 Rem, and the 22 PPC (thumb-hole)
  • TOTAL VARMINTS for the year : 448
