2018 Trip #2 with Ash and Myself

A one day trip trying to get in some shooting between wind and snow.  First of all that didn’t work.  We got to the field around 9:00 AM with very little wind.  As soon as we stopped the truck, the wind picked up, then it got overcast, and then it got worse.

2018 Trip #2, the weather just wouldn’t corporate

The wind wasn’t to bad at first, 10 – 15 mph, kind’a normal.  Around 1:00 PM it was well over 25 mph with gust to much more.  We tried to get set-up up and down wind to keep from shooting cross-wind.  That would work for awhile, then the wind would shift.  With the overcast skies it was very hard to see prairie dogs at 200 yards plus because they were the same color as the dead grass.  Trying to pick them out with the way my eyes are, was a task.  I go in next month to start my cataract surgery.

I took two rifles but only used my 700 Rem 223 AI.  We shot 216 in about 4 hours before the shooting went down hill and the dogs started going in for the night.

As a result I shot 106 out of the 216.  Not bad I guess with no real grass for the prairie dogs to eat, and more important the cattle.

The grass hasn’t started to turn green here in Colorado yet, we need moisture.  I hope we get enough moisture to get a good crop of GREEN GRASS going.  We’ve had a real dry winter, not near enough snow in the Eastern plains.  The mountains and ski resorts didn’t do much better.

We gave up the day after the wind got up over 40 + mph and the temperature dropped, a storm was a coming.  Headed home.
